Why has cancer become a major concern for most of us now as compared to before? The answer lies in our food choices deeply. Today, there has been an increase in the of production of processed food, junk food and fast food all that is too bad for your health and has given a rise to such serious illnesses.
Not only foods but other substances like tobacco, other chemicals and also being exposed to UV radiation or particular viruses can cause this disease. With time there has been a shift in food choices and a greater amount of income spent on eating food from outside than at homes which have contributed an increase to this problem further.
Where once more money was spent on eating at home has now been replaced by eating outside which again comes back to eating choices that you make.
The study suggests that diet plays a major role in whether a person gets cancer and that people tend to make healthier food choices when they are eating at home. There is another disturbing shift in our national mindset. We have moved from a time when soils were healthier and food was more nutritious and expensive-but now has been replaced by quantity, poor quality, less nutritious and widely available. You may have often come across this line ‘oh, this food is carcinogenic’ ‘and eating this causes cancer’ but many of us are not aware of what it actually means.
What does it mean for food to be carcinogenic?
Put simply, ‘a carcinogenic is something that causes cancer’ and for a food to be counted in this category, there must be strong evidence that links consumption of the product to an increased incidence of specific cancers along with evidence about how that food can cause cancer to develop.
Alcohol, processed meat and red meat are considered to be the most carcinogenic food. However, it is important to understand that carcinogenic foods means there is a link to cancer, not to how much cancer a food causes. As explained by an expert ‘It is not an indication of how much cancer that food causes or how much of that food would give you cancer’. And so here are a few everyday foods and drinks that are labeled as carcinogenic.
Red and processed meats
Processed meat is defined as any meat that has been preserved by salting or smoking including sausages, jerky etc.The world health organization has classified processed meats as a group 1 carcinogenic food, which suggests there is a strong evidence that suggests processed meat is linked to cancer. Red meat such as beef, is classified as a group 2A carcinogenic which means it’s a probable cause of cancer. Processed meat consists of chemicals that can be a cause of the development of cancer as they can cause damage to cells that line the bowel which can lead to bowel cancer. Red meat obtained from animals fed on natural diet are not as harmful compared to the ones fed on unhealthy diet. Red meet consists of heme iron, a naturally occurring and red pigment that helps form carcinogenic compounds in the body and has toxic effects on cells and genes.
This convenient food might be attractive but those bags of popcorn are lined with chemicals that are linked to not only causing infertility but also liver and pancreatic cancers. The lining is also linked to tumors and similarly, the diacetyl chemical use in the popcorn itself is linked to causing both lung damage and cancer.
Diet food beverages
It is even worse than conventional sugar drinks and according to research one of the most common artificial sweeteners causes a range of illnesses including birth defects and cancer. Artificial sweeteners like Sucralose, saccharin and various others have also been linked to cancers. Artificial flavors added to processed foods and artificial sweeteners added to drinks are filled with chemicals and are not good for health at all causing a rise in many other diseases as well which were not as common before.
Refined white flour
Another processed form of food and used in bakery items mostly and others as well are not good for your health. They take out all the nutrients and grain part and the remaining is packaged as white flour, drained of all other nutrients. The excess carbohydrate content poses as another threat to your body as regular consumption of refined carbohydrates is linked to an increase in breast cancer amongst women. Refined flour is known as high-glycemic food which causes your blood sugar levels in the body to increase which directly feeds cancer cell growth and speed.
The same goes for this food as well, where sugar is not directly linked to cancer however processed sugar tend to rapidly raise insulin levels in your body and feed the growth of cancer cells. High fructose content or fructose rich sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup are known to increase the risk of cancer as cancer cells quickly and easily metabolize them in order to proliferate. You can find this sugar available in most of the foods including cookies, juices, cakes, sauces and others.
